Adam Federici: Reading keeper 'sorry' for Wembley howler

Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici has apologised for his costly mistake in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

The keeper fumbled Alexis Sanchez's tame shot in extra time, as Arsenal made the FA Cup final with a 2-1 win.

He cried at full-time and staff of the Championship club consoled him.

"Just like to say thank you for all your messages and how sorry I am for my mistake. We gave our all and deserved to at least take it to pens," the 30-year-old Australian said on Twitter. 

"It's part of being a goalkeeper and I'm sure it will make me stronger! Thank you again for your amazing support."

Reading fans are planning a #flagsforfeds tribute at Wednesday's game against Birmingham at Madejski Stadium where they intend to bring Australian flags in support of their keeper.

His manager Steve Clarke also came out in support of him after Saturday's match, saying the mistake contrasted his brilliant league season.

"His performances in the Championship have been crucial to this club. We stick by him. We don't lose because of him. We lose as a team and we win as a team," Clarke told BBC Sport.

"This is the life of a keeper and Adam Federici is a top goalkeeper. We will support him. We all understand his worth to the club, no worries on that."

Forward Jamie Mackie added: "He's been our best player this season. If it wasn't for him we'd be in the bottom three."

The Royals are seven points above 22nd-placed Millwall, who have three games left.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney praises resurgent Marouane Fellaini

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney insists he was always confident Marouane Fellaini would come good at the club.

Fellaini produced another impressive display on Sunday when he starred in United's 4-2 derby win over Manchester City at Old Trafford.

The Belgium international did not start a game for United until the end of October, but he has really hit top form since breaking into Louis van Gaal’s side this season.

Van Gaal has described Fellaini as "unplayable" when the former Everton star is on his game, and Rooney believes the Belgian provides a vital outlet for United.

"We like to play out from the back and if teams are pressing us then we have him as an option,” Rooney said.

“He is probably the best in world football at bringing the ball down and getting us out of that pressure and further up the pitch."

Fellaini’s rise in stock at United is testament to the 27-year-old’s character, after he became a target for the Old Trafford boo-boys when settling into the club last season.

And Rooney thinks Fellaini should take credit for the way he dealt with the negativity that was directed his way.

"Last year was awful for him," Rooney said. "But in fairness he kept his head down worked hard and come through that tough period.

"It was tough for him but he had the whole team's support. We knew he was working hard and it wasn't just him struggling last season, a lot of us were.

"He was the one who took most of the blame for it. It was hard for him. Thankfully the manager has shown faith in him.

"He is showing now what he did at Everton and why Manchester United bought him. He is a quality player. He is a different option for us and it is starting to show on the pitch."
